West coast - Lambert's Bay:

West-coast crayfish. A delicacy few can resist.A seafood mecca and the heart of crayfish country, to be experienced fully during a visit to the Muisbosskerm seafood restaurant (www.muisbosskerm.co.za).

Pure white sandy beaches and blue sea offers ample opportunity for sea adventures and sport (www.westcoastsafaris.co.za).

Avid birders should visit Bird Island where colonies of gannets, cormorants and penguins can be seen together with the Cape fur seal. Verlorenvlei near Elands Bay is also not to be missed.

Cederberg wilderness area:

Maltese cross in the Cederberg wilderness areaSome of the finest scenery to be seen are these majestic Cederberg Mountains, ancient trails through pristine fynbos, rock formations, clear mountain streams, San rock art at the Stadsaal caves,  and the Maltese Cross and Wolfberg arch (www.capenature.co.za).

If you have time, do some wine tasting at the Cederberg Winery (www.cederbergwine.com).

Citrusdal:

"The Baths" hot water springs in CitrusdalCitrusdal is also known as the gateway to the Cederberg and as the name implies, the citrus industry is the lifeblood of this valley.

Visit Goede Hoop, one of the biggest packing facilities in the country (www.goedehoop.co.za).

For the outdoor enthusiast and quad biking, visit Citrusdal Quad Farm just outside Citrusdal.

The Hot Water Springs (www.thebaths.co.za), averaging 43°C with hot and cold swimming pools, spa baths and a licensed restaurant is something not to be missed.

Fauna and flora:

Carpet of flowers in early springAfter winter rains the spring landscape of the area becomes a carpet of wild flowers. An exceptional diversity of species is found due to differences in topography, ranging from the dry Karoo through to the wetter vlei areas of the Olifants River and the Sandveld coast. Peak season is between early August and late September. Visit the Clanwilliam Wild Flower exhibition end August.

The area is also home to a unique fauna, including the endangered Cape leopard, several species of antelope and a host of other small species and predators.

Amongst the many bird species are the spectacular Verreaux's eagle and Martial eagle, both of which are frequently spotted.

The Olifants river is unique in that it holds 8 endemic freshwater species found nowhere else on the planet. Amongst them is the Clanwilliam yellowfish - a highly sought after angling species. The river and dams such as Clanwilliam and Bulshoek dams is also very popular with bass anglers.
